Why Heritage Science Program

Establishing an academic heritage science program at Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology is essential for advancing knowledge and expertise in archaeological excavation, heritage conservation science, museum management, and cultural heritage studies. This program offers students from Egypt, Africa, the Middle East, and beyond specialized training and skills to preserve and protect the rich cultural heritage of Egypt and the regions mentioned above, fostering a deeper understanding of its historical and archaeological significance and promoting innovation in this field.

By offering master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Heritage Science, Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology can contribute to the development of a new generation of professionals and academics equipped to address the challenges facing heritage conservation and management.

This program not only enhances research skills but also promotes international collaboration and knowledge sharing, ultimately protecting the cultural legacy for future generations.

The Heritage Science academic program was approved in January 2024 and began in the Fall semester of the 2024/2025 academic year.

The academic program for master’s and Ph.D. in Heritage Science includes the following majors:

  • Archaeological Excavation.
  • Heritage Conservation Science.
  • Museum Management.
  • Cultural Heritage Studies.

Admission Process

Admission to postgraduate programs, including the heritage science program, is open to national students twice a year (for international students, once a year in November). The first announcement is in May, with the admission exam typically held in July. Accepted students will begin in the fall semester of the following academic year. The second announcement is in October, with the admission exam usually in November. Accepted students will start in the spring semester of the same academic year.

  • There is no age limit for applicants to the master’s and PhD programs in Heritage Science, except for students seeking an MOHE scholarship.
  • For MOHE Scholarships: Applicants for the MSc program should be under 30 years old, and applicants for the PhD program should be under 33 years old on October 15th of the application year.

  • In the four majors of the Heritage Science program, the following visions are set respectively:
  • Archaeological Excavation: Cultivating scientifically rigorous and ethically trustworthy expertise in the field of Archaeology and establishing a world-class research and education program to understand the history of diverse cultures and ways of life.
  • Heritage Conservation Science: Developing advanced experts and human resources in understanding, conserving, and preserving tangible and intangible cultural heritage through improved use of science and modern technology.
  • Museum Management: Attaining recognition as one of the world's leading sources of research and practice in museum management, known for its scientific, professional, practical, and applied expertise.
  • Cultural Heritage Studies: Developing human resources who understand the diversity of cultural heritage and work toward achieving sustainability in its preservation, generating innovative results in cultural heritage research, and raising awareness in society about cultural heritage.
Mission

The following missions are set for each of the four majors:

  • Archaeological excavation: Enabling our students build self-confidence through their research skills, reflecting competencies gained in the major, and maximizing archaeology's potential to enhance understanding of the past and foster responsibility for the future.
  • Heritage Conservation Science: Developing it as a new discipline and establishing modern academic research environments in Egypt and internationally by building expertise, fostering competent professionals, and academic graduates in the field of heritage restoration and conservation.
  • Museum Management: Promoting academic graduates through a theoretical and applied approach who keep pace with global developments in museum management. The program prepares graduates for the labor market by equipping them with knowledge and professional, scientific, and practical skills that enable them to solve problems faced by museums and contribute to economic and social development, enriching the lives of individuals and society.
  • Cultural Heritage Studies: Understanding international standards for cultural heritage, managing Egypt's cultural heritage, and conducting conservation work for international organizations and abroad.
Objectives

The following objectives in the four majors are set respectively:

  • Archaeological Excavation: Fostering archaeologists with research ethics and the skill to identify issues and solutions in archaeology so they can become tomorrow's leaders in a rapidly changing society and collaborate with other relevant experts or local residents who are stakeholders in archaeology.
  • Heritage Conservation Science: Establishing a center of expertise at E-JUST dedicated to studying the preservation of world culture, natural heritage, and historic urban landscapes. It also offers a high-quality learning environment and an academic framework to support research and development in heritage conservation.
  • Museum Management: Encouraging diverse stakeholders of the museum to explore different aspects of museum management, including administrative management, collection management, and communication management, while gaining theoretical, professional, and practical experience at local, regional, and international levels.
  • Cultural Heritage Studies: The ability to gather material on cultural heritage through comprehensive research, plan for its conservation, and consider economic and community factors.
